One pound at a time…

This has got to be the toughest part of training. The race is nearly 8 months away yet this is the most critical training phase. Included in this is dieting, which is so my favorite thing to do! Ever encountered a chocolate table before? For those of who have not come face to face with this torture device, it is a table full of every form and consistency of chocolate imaginable: cake, mousse, coated strawberries, loly-pops, brownies. They’re great for staring at while trying to slim down- thanks Merideth! :-) Ok, so dieting wouldn’t be so bad if you could just go into a major deficit and be done with it in two weeks. Can’t do this, though. This whole “quality workouts” and “gaining strength” thing gets right in the way! So it’s one pound a week.

Training’s the same way. We took 3 weeks completely off after Hawaii. This was to recover, physically and mentally, from the long season and rest up for the training to come. A side effect of this rest and recovery is loss of fitness (go figure!). I’m slower and weaker, and it doesn’t come right back! That first run is the worst! My HR shoots right up to threshold every time I go over those little inclines at the edges of driveways, and I have to nearly walk whenever I need to take down any fuel.

But we’ve begun our adventure toward the big LP! First stop: last year’s fitness level (ETA: mid-February). Second stop: highest fitness level thusfar (ETA: early July). Final destination: perfect balance between peak fitness and complete recovery (ETA: July 26th 2009).
